Art in the Woods is a 5-night immersive artist residency taking place September 1st - 6th, 2025 at Hideout Mountain, a 40-acre retreat space located in Santa Ysabel, California. This open call invites a small group of selected visual artists to create permanent or semi-permanent works throughout the property, inspired by the surrounding nature and cultural landscape.
Artists will be given designated outdoor locations to develop site-specific works, ranging from painting, sculpture, and wood carving to installations or architectural interventions. At the heart of this residency is a mission to integrate creativity with the natural environment, leaving behind public-facing art for future guests to enjoy.

The Art in the Woods residency takes place at Hideout Mountain, a secluded creative retreat nestled in the hills of Santa Ysabel, a region that has long been a place of connection to the earth, to spirit, and to community. Surrounded by 40 acres of oak groves, pine trees, and open skies, the property otters a peacetul and inspiring environment tor artists to focus, explore, and create.
You'll stay in one of our thoughtfully restored cabins, while you bring your vision to life. The land is dotted with sculptural trees, textured rock formations, rustic structures, and natural clearings: all potential canvases for your work. Whether you're painting, sculpting, carving, or building an installation, you'll find plenty of space and inspiration.
This residency is about leaving a mark, not just on canvas but on the land itself. Your piece will become a permanent part of Hideout Mountain, a lasting contribution to a living, growing collection of site-specific art.
We’re inviting five selected artists to stay with us for five days, surrounded by nature, inspiration, and community. Each artist will create a permanent art piece on-site — whether it’s a mural, sculpture, installation, or nature-based intervention.
